Greg Makes it to Marafun

Olympic Silver medallist to star at the Angus Rotary Marafun on 25th May

Forfar Rotary Club have announced that Greg Drummond will be given a celebrity welcome at the Angus Marafun on 25th May

Dave Valentine MBE, convener of the Angus Rotary Marafun 2014, announced today that Olympic Silver medallist Greg Drummond will appear at this year’s Marafun event to be held in Forfar on Sunday 25th May.

He commented that “Greg’s agreement to join us at the Angus Rotary Marafun will be of enormous interest to runners and spectators alike.”

He said that “so many people would like to congratulate Greg on his recent achievements as a member of the GB Silver medal winning team at the Sochi Winter Olympics. I can’t think of a better tribute to Greg than letting the Marafun crowds give him a real “Angus” welcome back home to his hometown of Forfar.

Welcoming the news, Angus Provost Cllr Helen Oswald who will officially open the Marafun and start the countdown for the main race added  “Greg is a fantastic ambassador for his sport and for Angus, so it’s great that he’s able to join us at the Marafun. He’ll get a great reception from his home crowd and I’m sure his stunning Olympic success will help spur on our competitors.” “

Greg Drummond said  “I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at the Marafun next weekend. It should be a great day and I hope people will attend to take part and see my silver medal from Sochi come to my hometown. It's been my toughest curling season ever so it will be good to finally come back home and meet up with many old friends whom I will be cheering on as they take part in some of the event “

Mike Ferguson, Owner of the Forfar Indoor Sports centre also welcomed the news and said that “Greg’s achievement has been a great inspiration to a new generation of young curlers and everyone at the centre will be excited to see him make this starring appearance in his hometown”.

Explaining that full details of Greg’s participation will unfold next week, Dave Valentine added that this year’s event will kick off with a kids’ Mini-Mile at 12 noon followed swiftly with a Family and Friends Fun Run which will enable family groups along with friends run or trot one lap of the main circuit and help raise sponsorship cash for our main charity”

“There will be three zones in this year’s Marafun. The main “Run Zone” will be a circuit along East and West High Street. This which will cut off the long uphill stretch along Queen Street which many runners found to be pretty gruelling. As in previous years, we will have what we are calling our “Fun Zone” with street entertainment, stands and catering around the Municipal Buildings in Castle Street However, for the first time this year, we are organising a “Sports Zone” which will encompass part of the Myre Green and part of the Myre Car Park. Locally based sports organisations from across Angus will use this area to organise demonstrations and sporting events to encourage participation from the public.”

“Due to the generosity of our Sports Zone sponsor the Dunnichen Stone, and thanks to the “in-kind” support of Angus Council, we won’t be charging the sports clubs for their participation. However, we are asking that participants find some way of raising cash on the day for our main Charity – the Ninewell’s Cancer Campaign.”
