Shulinab in Guyana.
Picture above shows Fiona receiving small gifts from one on the ladies who will benefit from the money invested by Forfar Rotary in this remote region in Guyana. It is hoped that the money will eventually be repaid and that this will lead to even more funding being available to others and will act similar to that of Trust Banks.
Pictured below is another of the ladies making uniforms for the children to attend nursery school. This is another initiative by the women of Shulinab district to give everyone a start in their schooling where classes etc. and indeed the whole village has no electricity.
Part of the funds were also allocated to buying simple reading books for the village school and this will assist teachers from Project Trust etc with much needed teaching aids.

The club hope to have regular contact with updates on the project although being so remote and without internet connect locally this will be approximately every three months.
Information of Fiona's most recent visit to the region is obtainable by reading this letter
Dear Chairperson, Treasurer and members of the Women’s group
Forfar Rotary Club kindly donated a total of G$140000 to the Women’s group of Shulinab and it’s two satellite villages, Meriwau and Quiko to invest in their chosen areas of work. After discussion with the groups the money was distributed as follows: G$60000 to the mother village and G$40000 to each of it’s satellite communities. This money should be kept in the village safe located in the SCPDA office and the signature of the village Toshao and group chairperson obtained before any money is withdrawn. The treasurer is responsible for keeping up to date accounts of money being withdrawn and deposited into the accounts
Each village selected three or four areas they wish to focus on to start with at the recent meeting with Miss Faye and it is hoped that you work hard to make a success of your plans. It is hoped that this will be reviewed every three months and any changes made if the groups decide.
As was said in the meeting, the members of the Rotary club would appreciate updates every three months on the progress of the groups and a copy of the most recent accounts. It was agreed that the chairs of the three groups would meet to organise this and if the completed is handed to Miss Faye Fredericks she shall arrange the posting of it to the UK. If any other contact needs to be made to Fiona or the Rotary Club then the chairperson of the club should talk to Faye Fredericks to arrange this.
Shulinab Village Council may ask to see the accounts of any of the groups at any time and it is hoped that they will be given in as complete a form as possible. The new PeaceCorps volunteer is qualified in accounts and would be most willing to help to get things in order if required.
The Rotary club donated the money in the hope that the G$40000, for Quiko and Meriwau, and G$60000 for Shulinab, respectively would be made back after the initial investments and used again and again to fund future projects as the group decides. Therefore the women must ensure when selling their crafts and snacks that they take into consideration ALL the costs of materials and any machine labour when deciding on an appropriate price. The village council or any of the volunteers in the village would be able to advise if you’re unsure.
The village shops may be a good option to sell any crafts or clothes to passing trade and this should be arranged with the shop owners if appropriate.
Yours Sincerely,
Fiona Tait (acting on behalf of Forfar Rotary Club)
2010 Update
Monies that were donated by your club were able to allow women in our community to enhance their capacity in sewing, crafts, catering and needle works.
Women of Shulinab were able to exhibit their handicraft, culturally made wines, farm products and needle works at the last Rupununi expo. At present in our women’s group there are still raw materials to be sewn and stocks to be sold. This is value of these items $35000 dollars. We would like to assure you that monies donated to our women’s group are being put to good use. We once again would like to thank you for this kind gesture.
